Fader blogs some rai!

& here’s an excellent gnawa-crossover tune from a Wary’s well- and playfully-produced Gnawa Dance album. Which is more rai than gnawa. “Sallama” contains acoustic instruments and (at times) full vocal auto-tune, yessir.

MONTREAL TAKE TWO

a few weeks ago I was invite to inaugurate the BoomBox party up in Montreal — and ended up spending 7 hours in Newark Airport as they cancelled one flight after the other…

anyhow, the event is rescheduled for this Saturday, and it should be even better, as now the amazing selector Gervase from London’s Heatwave crew will be joining us!

In other news, the final Skull Disco release, Soundboys’ Gravestone Gets Desecrated by Vandals is available as 2 CD and a 2LP selection. My remix of ‘In the Void’ appears on both. The records are particularly interesting, as it is marbled grey vinyl with no information whatsover. Tombstone style! You need serious subs to hear it, but Raz’s 12-minute rmx is a definite highlight.

DID SOMEBODY SAY WUBSTEP?

No, somebody said HEAVY CENTRIST WUBSTEP aka mid-range wobble from our favorite subsidiaries of the Tempa/Ammunition/FWD/Rinse conglomerate.

…but the center is where things go to die?

over in Glasgow, Mungo’s Hi Fi roots system gets its wub on w/ the new Scrub A Dub sublabel, one to watch, here singing of dubplates on a mp3:

LIMADO

so the news is that altitude sickness has got me bad, despite the proper curative measures. i can’t really think anymore.

so i as try to wake up through headache & nausea, here’s one of my favorite tracks by Barcelona’s Cauto, sweet contemplative melody slinking around loose breakstep drum programming. Soon to be available on his free Disboot album! despertar = to wake up.

and here’s info on the Lima dates: i’ll be giving an artist’s talk/Q&A this Thursday, doing a more ‘out’ DJ set with violinist Pauchi Sasaki on Friday, and then we gather strength for the blowout Sonido Inca dance party on Saturday with Sonido Martines. Sonido will open up for the legendary/amazing Los Mirlos on Dec 12. in Lima (they were featured prominently on the ‘Roots of Chicha comp’)

NOCHE DE CUMBIA

tonite, Tues November 11, Williamburg, I’ll be joining residente Geko Jones @ the new QUE BAJO party. Cumbia fans come through!

QBajo RuptQBajo RuptQBajo Rupt

I’ll be playing exclusively cumbia colombiana and cumbia sonidera (read: no crunk cumbia, no mashups, etc). Just that sweet slow shuffle.

I’ve been digging deep into sonidera lately, finding a lot of El Hijo de la Cumbia production on CDs floating around the Mexican sonidera scene in Brooklyn shops. They never list the producers, but his style stands out. Here’s one I found last week. Vox by La Contra.

Says El Hijo: “de donde lo conseguistes ? jajajaa ya ni me acordaba de el .. ”

THIS WEEKEND IN BASS

fiesta soot sept 13

this Saturday in Manhattan, the Soot gang’s all here. (a real accomplishment considering we’re nonstop touring and live on 3 different continents).

then on Sunday I’ll be setting up shop alongside other “Superstar DJs” at the Brooklyn Flea and selling some choice records from my collection.

info on both events:

FIESTA SOOT – Sat Sept. 13th @ Bowery Poetry Club. 308 Bowery, NYC
$5 b4 11pm, $8 after. 10pm-late.

“to celebrate the release of Maga Bo’s debut album, Archipelagoes (in stores on September 22nd), we’re uniting the world-travelling Soot gang to a Manhattan rendezvous on Saturday September 13!!

Maga Bo from Brazil will unleash a special live/DJ set incorporating material from Archipelagoes. Come find out why his live sets are so in-demand (Turntable of the Hudson, London’s Fabric, and Berlin’s Transmediale all came knocking on his door this month). Fresh from their successful Europe tour, DJ Rupture & Jahdan Blakkamoore will present their dubbed-out soundsystem set for the first time in the US. Be sure to check Rupture’s new video for his upcoming mix album, Uproot.

Pirate-turned percussionista Filastine is gonna unveil material from his forthcoming album on Soot, and DJs Geko Jones & Eliel Lucero will round things out with the latest in guaracha y bass, cumbia, and dubstep.

last minute special guest — La Yegros, one of our favorite vocalists for Buenos Aires hopping scene, will bring her special flavors of Arabic-tinged beats + vocales for a live PA.”

NO TE LO PIERDAS

then we eat a very nice breakfast or maybe even brunch and meet up at Fort Greene’s mighty Flea:

NIGHT OF THE UNEXPECTED

notu

prompted by summer’s end (with the thunderous chaos of Brooklyn carnaval), I’m working on some longer “Summertime Reading” posts (better late than never). In the meantime, this is a quick note to say I’ll be playing a short set at Amsterdam’s Night of the Unexpected Festival this Friday. I go on around 10:40pm. (Wait, this is Holland: I go on precisely at 10:40pm.)

Other performers include the Stephen O’Malley/Pita project, Jaki Liebezeit & Burnt Friedman, Dick el Demasiado, and a performance of Iannis Xenakis’ Mycènes Alpha.

No idea what I will play; it’ll be hands-on and relatively busy, prob about half danceish and other other half in the outer reaches of turntable galaxy.

So much travel has made my brain or body jetlag-agnostic, so we may head over to Bassculture @ OT301 after Unexpected.

DEAR WEST COAST PEOPLES

dear West Coast peoples, this is a quick reminder that I’ll be playing at Portland’s Holocene tomorrow night (1st time in Pdx in ages and its only 5 bucks), and at a big Surya Dub party in San Francisco on Saturday.

WEST AFRICAN APHASIA AND THE BROOKLYN NIGHT

The (admittedly loose) theme of yesterday’s radio show was West African Aphasia – songs whose titular information was missing, largely due to bad xerox CD-r packaging.

Bootleg african CDs go for around $2 each up in Harlem – VERY AFFORDABLE.

here’s some soukous from Afro-Rhythme’s Soukouss Vibration vol. 6. The back info is illegible, the front simply says “Ancien Combattant”, with an image of a sun setting over miles of ocean… but the image has been copied so much (or so badly) that it now looks like a nuclear explosion over a dark, blood-red sea.

[audio:soukouss_vibration_excerpt.mp3]

Soukouss Vibration – tracks 5 + 6 soukouss medley

this Saturday I’ll be dropping beats late (like 3:30am) at the Lose Yr Sh1t! Brooklyn loft party, alongside dutty hermano Geko Jones, and $mall Change & co. Party goes til the sun returns, apparently there’s a nice roofdeck, etc.

Fact is, when you DJ late at a loft party, the guidelines and expectations – already loose – become looser; expect surprises. Plus its my b-day 2 days later so, as Lil Jon says, “Yeeeaaah”.

My new mix CD, Porque Soy Sonidero Y Voy A Muchos Lugares (made for this last tour) is now available exclusively at Turntable Lab. An hourlong blend of now-thing summer bump.

I’ll have copies with me at live shows as well. Live shows? Like this one.
